Armstrong News

Read article about April 18 Armstrong interview in Georgia.

Read ESPN article about steroids found in Armstrong's home.

Read article about Lance's court date in Italy.

So, first off, Lance just announced that press people will want to be present in Georgia for the final press conference where he will make a huge announcment. This could mean a couple of things. He could announce he won't be riding the Tour de France, though he has recently said he be there for sure. He could be announcing an early retirement. Like one other blogger mentioned, he could be announcing his engagement to Cheryl Crow. Whatever it is, it's just like him to something like this to get into peoples heads.

Second, and the largest bomb dropped today is the ESPN article about Lance's previous personal assistant, Mike Anderson and his allegation that Armstrong is a cheat. Anderson, who says he had a key to Armstrong's apartment in Girona, Spain, alleges he was cleaning the bathroom in "early 2004" when he found a white box labeled "like any other prescription drug" but that did not have a doctor's prescription attached.

Written on the box was the trademark name "Androstenine, or something very close to this," Anderson said.

"He went to the computer, looked it up on the WADA or USADA Web site[s], and confirmed that what he had found was an androgen, a listed banned substance," Anderson's court brief states, referring to the World Anti-Doping Agency and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Anderson said he put the box back in the medicine cabinet where he found it. Fearing he would be fired, he said he did not confront Armstrong about it. He said he looked for the box again after Armstrong left Girona to train in the Canary Islands, but didn't find it.

In the article Armstrong mentions the press will have to wait 2 weeks time and that he has to talk to the press and tell them something important. I'm wondering if he is meaning the announcement in Georgia? And if so, will it be about the steroids or about the other items I've mentioned.

And third, Lance was in Italy to meet with a magistrate in Lucca about the Simeoni case. The short of the case is that Lance called him a liar because of stuff Simeoni said about a doctor Lance previous worked with and now Simeoni is suing Lance. The interesting part about this news is the addition claim that Armstrong asked then-Domina Vacanze rider Mario Cippollini to apply pressure so Simeoni would be sacked.

Juicy stuff!

Pictures of Today's Ride

If I didn't know better I would have figured I'd died and went to heaven. Today couldn't have been a better day to ride. Today's ride took me from Chico, up Neal Rd to the Paradise bike path, to Skyway, then Coutolenc Rd to a small town called Lovelock and back. The round trip is about 65 miles with about 3000 feet of climbing and took about 3 hours and 50 minutes. The scenery was beautiful, the temperature perfect at about 60 to 70, and the roads empty and open.

Update on Tour of California Bicycle Stage Race

Read the article at VeloNews here

Here is the beginnings of the tour's website

Well, it's looking like February of 2006 will be an exciting month for California cyclists and fans of professional bike racing. It was announced Friday at the world track championships in Carson, California that AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) will put up $35 million over the next 5 years to get this race off the ground.

I've heard conflicting reports as to the length of the race but whether it's 8 or 9 days of racing, or 15 or 18 teams, it's still going to be an incredible event. Slated to transverse California, the 700+ mile race will begin in Northern California and ends in Southern California.

Details of the race, including a course map, title sponsor and television rights, are expected to be finalized over the next few months. I'll keep you all posted!

Transparent Computer Screens

Another entry under the fun loving computer stuff department...

If you have a digi-cam, you too can make these fun tranparent looking desktop pictures and wow your friends!

The trick to these is to use a digital camera to take a picture of the area, and then set it as your desktop wallpaper. Just put the laptop in the correct place and voila, you have a "transparent" screen. Though there are other, more complicated ways to achieve the same effect.

Here is a link where you can look at a gallery of similiar shots.

Some Pictures I Promised

Here are a few pictures I took on Friday while on a bike ride.

Two Fun Stories

Story #1 is about a computer programmer who chucked the cubicle lifestyle for one of a bike messenger. Makes me wish there were a market for bike couriers in Chico.

Story #2 involves a gentleman who's creditcards were ganked by some young punk and how he tracked him down.

Both true story's and fun reads, at least in my book.

Sad Day in Chico...

Read article here

The worse possible thing occured yesterday as a tractor-trailer hauling hundreds of cases of Sierra Nevada ales overturned on Highway 70 just after 2 p.m. Monday. The drive was not hurt, nor was the beer, but while none of the bottles appeared to break, brewery spokesman Steve Harrison said the product will be returned to Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico and probably destroyed. I'm recommending they bring the beer to my house where it can be properly destroyed! I'd even recycle the bottles!

Is It Violent Video Games or Religion?

Read the article here

Charles Cooper makes some good points in his article about violent video games and their impact on our young. Coop speaks of a recent piece on CBS' "60 Minutes" explaining how the video game "Grand Theft Auto" supposedly inspired an Alabama teen to murder three police officers. As well, he makes the point that religious and educational groups continously press Uncle Sam to regulate media and gaming industries to protect minors from damage they might suffer from being exposed to "harmful" content.

The one interesting point that caught my attention was this quote:

Maybe it's coincidence, but religion figured prominently in recent national news stories about shooting incidents. Terry Ratzmann, the Wisconsin gunman who last month went on a shooting rampage, regularly attended services at the Living Church of God in Brookfield, Wis. "We believe that the motive has something to do with the church and the church services more so than any other possible motive," the Associated Press quoted a Brookfield police captain as saying.

And what should we make of Dennis Rader, a man who was president of his church council and described as a faithful Christian? These days he's in policy custody and accused of being the notorious BTK killer.

I suppose the times haven't changed too much, only the medium. I'm still waiting for "Passion of the Christ" for Xbox so I can go on a crusade to convert the heathens.

Great Irony

Read article here

Mark W. Mumma, a web hosting and email service provider in Oklahoma City, in attempting to opt-out of receiving spam messages from Cruise.com and it's parent company, Omega World Travel, Inc. found himself the focus of a $4 million lawsuit. Now this has got to be the most ironic situation ever, a spammer suing a person they send spam message to.

Mumma's attorney, Richard Toikka of Arlington, VA based Metropolitan Legal Services, LLC., filed a motion March 15, to dismiss Case #05-CV-122. The filing was accompanied by a Motion for Sanctions against John Lawless, opposing party's counsel and General Counsel of Omega World Travel, Inc. Mumma believes the lawsuit was brought on in an apparent attempt to cost him money and discourage him from pursuing rightful damages under Oklahoma's spam laws.

Waiting For Contact From CSUC

Read article here

Chico State computers storing some vital student, faculty, and alumni records and personal data have been compromised or in other words, hacked. More than 59,000 people will be contacted and informed of this issue which is being called the largest computer hacking incident the university has seen. The server hackers targeted held the names and Social Security numbers of current, former and prospective students and occurred more than 3 weeks ago.

I'm not really surprised something like this occurred as Chico State campus by it's nature is an easy target. With so many students and faculty, a break in would be fairly easy with a bit of social engineering, though it doesn't seem the case in this instance. This isn't the first time this has happened either. A couple years back, I had took a security course there and the instructor mentioned an earlier break in which involved a few elementary school kids. Darned those kiddies are getting smart. So, once again, I'm not surprised, just waiting for my letter or email.

"Amazing Race" Spoiler!

Don't read below if you care about watching the Amazing Race...

Wildflower Out in Force

Well, it's that time of year in Chico. Spring isn't officially here yet, but don't tell the wildflowers or the trees in the orchards. About two weeks ago on a bike ride through the parts of the orchards around Chico, I saw most the trees in bloom. The other day I road the same route and didn't notice the flowers on the trees anymore. I'm assuming they've turned into buds now as we haven't had any rain to knock them off lately.

I was driving on the overpass near my house where I can get a fairly good view of the hills above Chico and noticed how nice and dark green all the trees and shrubs are. As well, you can see how the lighter green of the ground cover is starting to come in and id beginning to turn to yellow. In a couple of days or at least by weeks end, the light green will be all yellow as the ground is covered in wildflowers. It's quite beautiful, so I'll see about taking some pictures and posting them.

The unfortunate part about the weather being so nice is that all the wildflowers will be dead and gone by the time The Wildflower bike ride takes place at the end of April.

Julich Wins Race To the Sun!

In a race which began with three shortened stages due to snowy weather, Lance Armstrong dropping out, and finally sun, Bobby Julich pulled out a huge victory for team CSC. Bobby nabbed the leaders jersey on stage 5, Rognes to Toulon (Mont-Faron), and heald it to the finish in Nice.

It was a sweet victory on many levels for Julich who resides in Reno, NV. Paris-Nice is the first Pro Tour race ever and Julich rode superbly. In the process, he is also the first rider to wear the Pro Tour leader's jersey, and to boot, Nice is Julich's European home.

I'm about to watch about an hour and a half of the race on OLN and will see how that is to the live type-written commentary provided by CyclingNews.com.

You can read about each stage at the links below, thanks to the folks CyclingNews.com.

Tour Of The Unknown Valley

Upon pulling up near the firestation in Willows I ran into the guys I had ridden with the last century. At first I only saw Pat, Bill, and Randy (I think his name is Randy) until Johnathan came cruising up on his orange Rambouillet. The reason I mention the Rambouillet is because it's hand built in Walnut Creek. So, the day was nice and warm with a decent breeze. Randy and Bill raced off the front of the group after about 10 miles but Pat, Johnathan, and myself decided we were most interested in having a good time just riding, rather than hammering. The previous ride I did with these guys, The Paskenta Century, we hammered the whole day and it was brutal. Anyway, so we took our time and enjoyed ourselves at all the rest stops. I had a great time, got some great exercise in, and worked on my tan (actually sunburn).

The next century ride planned is Bike Around the Buttes and starts in Sutter, just south of the Buttes.

Anyway, check out the picture I took of the Unknown Valley.

Saturday Fun...

On Saturday, a few friends and I decided we would go up to a reservoir above Paradise, a town about 20 miles from Chico. We were planning to fish and hike but never made it to the reservoir. Basically, we didn't take into account snow. Click the Read More to see some of the pictures.

Martha's Back!

Article link here

"Someday, I hope to have the chance to talk more about all that has happened, the extraordinary people I have met here and all that I have learned," she wrote. "Right now, as you can imagine, I am thrilled to be returning to my more familiar life."

Such as how to boost a car, finer points of bank robery, and home-made fruit wine. Look for details in the new issue of Martha Stewart's Living, in jail.

Bruyneel talks about threats to Armstrong

Discovery Channel team manager Johan Bruyneel revealed on Wednesday's De Laatste Show (Belgium) that Lance Armstrong received two death threats during the 2004 Tour de France. "No-one knows this, but in the mountain time trial to L'Alpe d'Huez, I had an armed security guard next to me in the following car," said Bruyneel. "And there were also agents in front of Armstrong. We were terrified that day."

Yikes, as if racing wasn't dangerous enough already.

With the Internet Urinal, you'll never have to leave your computer again. Arraignment Is Big News In Chico

The arraignment of the 8 fraternity members seems to be pretty big news not only in Chico, but in the bay area as well. I say this due to the large number of new media vans (more like motorhomes) which are parked down the street from my office, in front of the Chico PD. So, you be able to get the info first hand thanks to the people at ABC7/KGO-TV news. Check out the ABC7/KGO-TV article here.

8 Charged In Chico Hazing Death

Article link here. Read it fast as it seems the Chico Enterprise Record is now charging to read archived new columns after 24 hours of being posted.

Today, at a noon time news conference, Butte County DA, Mike Ramsey will announce the names of those who will be charged with the the hazing death of 21 year-old Matthew Carrington. Carrington died as a result of cardiac dysrhythmia an interrupted heart rhythm due to water intoxication.

Over all, this has been a troubling year for Chico State students and staff due to the number of near death experiences. Just this year alone, there have been 3 near fatalities due to drinking and now this death. I'm hoping the charges against these 8 students will send a message about hazing as well as alcohol abuse.

I'm interested as to why these types of reports are growing in number. When I pledged, there was a fair amount of drinking going on, but I don't recall any problems with drinking induced deaths or near deaths being reported. Now be aware that while I was an active, it was common to have kegs at the house on Fridays or weekends, alcohol was allowed at the fraternity house, and large parties were not uncommon. These days, there is no alcohol allowed in or around fraternity houses, therefore there are no large parties or kegs on the porch, but the problems attributed to drinking seem to have increased. I guess when the partying gets pushed underground things get out of hand.

It's Time To Ride, Again

Well, I can't say that I'm dissapointed about missing out on the flatland suffer-fest know as the Rice Valley Tandem Rally. But the results of staying at home riding the indoor trainer were bad in themselves. After hurting my back getting off the trainer, I've spent the last two weeks sitting on a heating pad as well as missing a number of days of work. Of course, the pain wasn't enough to keep me from riding my bike and it actually seemed to help loosen up my back. So, I've been able to get about 4 to 5 days in each week, doing about 10 hours a week in anticipation of this weekends ride, The Tour of The Unknown Valley. I'm hoping to feel well enough to complete the entire 100 miles, but have the option of bagging out and doing only 65 if I don't feel well at the cut off point.

After this there isn't another ride nearby until the Wildflower on April 24th.

Raider's Get Moss

Randy Moss, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings, has signed with the Oakland Raiders. This is about as good a move as the Raider's can make to get back to the high flying offensive game that has been their mainstay of the past. Read the AP story here. I hope this can get the Raider's back to their winning ways of a few seasons ago. If not, it's a lot to pay and is going to cause some salary caps problems down the road.

Yahoo Turns 10

Ah, it seems like only yesterday when I first jumped on that Yahoo! bandwagon. It was the talk of the town when they came out with MyYahoo!, the push technology theory of giving the user only what the user is interested in reading. So, go out and celebrate on Yahoo by using this link to get free ice cream. Also, check out what the first Yahoo.com page looked like, here.
